Discover the beautiful Shimanami sea route in the Setouchi Inland Sea.
Join me as I drive through the impressive Shimanami Kaido, a 60-kilometer-long roadway that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku. It connects to six small islands along its route and is a popular destination for cyclists because of its dedicated bike paths that let you explore more of the island group.
Starting from Onomichi City in Honshu, the Shimanami Kaido traverses the six islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima and Oshima, before ending at Imabari City, Ehime prefecture in Shikoku. Opened in 1999, this modern roadway allows travelers to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the islands' small towns.
One stop along the way on Ikuchijima Island and drop by a local shopping street, "Shiomachi Shotengai" and introduce some local foods. Another curious stopover is Tatara-Shimanami Park ("Michi no Eki"~road station) in Omishima, where you'll enjoy the great view of a beautiful large bridge and Seto inland sea.
