Be fascinated by Daikagura ~Japanese street performance & English Rakugo!

DAIKAGURA
is one of Japan’s most traditional performing arts with a history spanning more than 400 years. It was initially performed for the gods of Shinto shrines but became popular in the late 19th century, appearing in entertainment halls and theaters. It often involves a signature Japanese act called the shishi-mai (lion dance) and also includes dancing, playing instruments, and juggling.

Experience a Daikagura performance by Horaiya Kouk in English!  He received an award from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2016 and won the Takatsuki Street Performance Grand Prix 1st Prize in 2020. He has been performed in overseas as well as in Japan.

RAKUGO is a traditional Japanese storytelling performance that began in the Edo Period (1603–1868). A lone narrator sits on a raised platform called a kōza and using only small props such as a paper fan or hand towel, tells complicated humorous stories. The storyteller remains seated all throughout, playing different characters and acting out various scenes. Unable to use elaborate costumes or backdrops, the Rakugo performer uses his skill to inspire the imagination and the bring the story to life.

Let the professional comic story teller Katsura Fukuryu fascinate you with engaging stories! Born in Winnipeg, Canada, he moved to Japan in 2001 as an English teacher. He became interested in Rakugo and began applying his previous showbiz experience into this art form. In October 2016, he joined the Katsura Fukudanji Ichimon (house) and became the 11th disciple of Katsura Fukudanji. He is the second foreign professional Rakugo performer this generation and the 3rd in 400 years history. He has appeared in shows all over Japan as well as in US cities such as Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Hawaii.
