Enjoy Autumn leaves in Kōyasan! Part2 ~Okunoin ~

Delve deeper into Japan’s spiritual past with a trip to Okunoin, the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi or Kukai (Kukai is his Buddhist name and Kobo Daishi is his posthumous name).
Kukai founded Shingon Buddhism and is one of the most revered religious figures in the history of Japan. This makes Okunoin one of the most sacred places in Japan and a popular pilgrimage spot.

Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum can be found at the end of a two kilometer walk through Okunoin’s cemetery, the largest in Japan, where over 200,000 tombstones can be found.

This autumn walking tour (part2) begins at the Ichinohashi Bridge which is the traditional entrance to Okunoin. Visitors pay respect to Kobo Daishi by bowing before crossing it.
