In this tour, we visit Sasuke, a traditional scissor and knife shop that has been around for over 150 years. Located in Sakai, Osaka, here we meet master blacksmith Yasuhiro Hirakawa. He is a 5th generation traditional craftsman of Sasuke, and the only remaining traditional scissor craftsman in all of Japan.

His quality bonsai gardening scissors can range from $1,100 to around $35,000, and customers must wait over a year to purchase his products. These are regarded not just as high-quality tools, but as highly revered works of art.

During the tour, we will find out the secrets behind the creation of these quality scissors and knives, from the materials used, to the crafting process and techniques. Hirakawa-san’s legendary scissors can take four times longer to forge than a traditional knife. Discover how this expert blacksmith creates his masterpieces.
