Discover the filming location for the movie The Last Samurai.

Nestled in the dense forest of Mount Sosha is the Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, a thousand-year-old temple complex that is as breathtaking in its construction as is the views that you will see upon reaching it. The mountain is located at the edge of Himeji City, and is only 30 minutes away from the city center using the bus and ropeway.

Greeting visitors at the temple grounds is the Niomon Gate which leads them into the sprawling complex surrounded by a forest of trees.

The most prominent structure in the area is the Maniden, an exquisite wooden temple hall, constructed on pillars on a steep slope. A short walk away are the other temple structures known as Mitsunodo: the Daikodo (main hall), Jikido (lodging and dining hall, with an exhibit of temple treasures) and Jogyodo (training hall).

The gorgeous scenery of this location has been used as the backdrop for many TV and film productions, the most notable of which was the movie The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise.
