Don’t miss one of Kyoto’s most popular destinations, the Fushimi Inari Taisha. Fushimi Inari is one of the most prominent of the estimated 3,0000 Shinto shrines dedicated to the Shinto god of rice scattered around Japan. The Inari shrines are known locally as O-inari-san and are frequented by Japanese people of all ages.
It is well-known for thousands of vermilion torii gates that line the pathways leading to the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari. The Romon Gate donated in 1589 by the famous leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, welcomes visitors at the entrance. At the back of main hall (honden), guests pay respect to the local deity by giving a small offering. Fox statues can also be found around the area as they are believed to be Inari’s messengers.
